Hallein, a city of workers and miners, is located 15 km south of the festival town Salzburg on the banks of the river Salzach. Since more than 770 years Hallein has the right to call itself a town.
The old part of the town - which looks like a medieval town - is the centre of a community with an area of 26,97 km² and about 20.000 inhabitants.
The quarter and Health Resort Bad Dürrnberg is located on 772 meters altitude, near to the German border. The highest peak in this area is called Zinkenkogel (1312 m altitude).
There are the Zinkenlifte, which open in winter an attractive region for skiing and snowboarding with special offers for families. In summer you find here Salzburg`s longest toboggan slide (2,2 km).
Here you find also the private clinic EMCO-Privatklinik, the Kurhaus St. Josef, the pilgrimage church Maria Dürrnberg and the Schaubergwerk of the Salinen Austria AG.
